Professional Tips For The Best Waxing Results

Depending on your skin type, hair type and rate of hair growth, waxing has been known to provide smooth results for as long as 3-8 weeks and is suggested as the longest lasting temporary hair removal method.

A lot of people are usually scared to wax because they “heard” it might be painful. When you do not get the technique right, then comes pain. This post is meant to give insights to provide an almost painless DIY waxing experience.

A lot of our customers comeback to say this method of hair removal is not as painful as they heard once they get the hang of the technique.

So, straight to business!

Before waxing, here are some points to note;

  • Lighter skinned people might experience some redness after waxing (it goes away within a few hours), so, if you’re going for a special occasion, do it a couple of days beforehand
  • Always wash your hands and inside of fingers first with a little DETERGENT to kill any germs or bacteria that might infect your skin prior to waxing. An antiseptic bathing soap is fine too.
  • If you’re concerned about pain, you can purchase our numbing cream which you apply an hour before waxing.
  • Read all instructions that come with your kit carefully.
  • Always test a small area of skin for sensitivity or an allergic reaction.
  • Your hair needs to be a little bit long, about 1/4 inch (about a grain of rice), for best results. So, if your hairs are longer, trim them down with the precision scissors in your kit. If shorter, allow them grow out a bit.
  • With this method of hair removal, you should have your bath hours beforehand because hair absorbs moisture which makes it soft and harder for the wax to adhere to. Dry hair is tough and/so easier to pull off.
  • People who are ingrown hair prone should exfoliate the area before waxing to remove dead skin cells that can contribute to ingrown hairs or, just wax a day after your weekly exfoliation.
  • Those melting manually using the double boiler method should be careful not to overheat the wax. You don’t want to burn your skin. Lower the temperature of the wax for facial hair and only use it on one small area at a time.
  • A wax heater keeps the temperature of the wax constant and suitable for the skin all through the waxing process, you should consider investing in this.
  • Always test the wax on the inside of your wrist to check for temperature before applying to the skin/target areas.
  • The consistency of the wax should be soft, not runny. If its runny, its too hot, let it cool a bit.

During Waxing, here are points to note;

  • Note the direction of your hair
    growth first; ie the direction your hair is sleeping in.
  • Apply a thin layer of wax in the direction the hair grows.
  • Make sure the wax has a lip by curving the edges and ends of the wax so you can get a good grip for lifting and pulling it off fast.
  • Pull your skin taut and then pull the wax back (in the opposite direction of hair growth), in one smooth movement. Don’t be timid – Slight pulls will only leave patchy areas as well as cause more pain.

After waxing;

  • Remove any excess wax using the pre wax cleanser.
  • You can apply some ice if you think your skin needs it.
  • Remember to apply the post wax balm in your kit
  • For those prone to ingrown hairs, when skin is freshly waxed, limit creating ingrown hairs and other skin irritations by not wearing tight clothing around the area.
  • Also, exfoliate the skin one to two days later. This will help prevent dead skin cells from building up to trap hairs that become ingrown hairs.

Foot Note: If you’re not totally committed to following through the waxing process, you may just want to go to a salon/spa and let a professional do it for you. But be aware that waxing at a salon can get pretty pricey, especially if you want to remove hair from large areas. Just to give you an idea, it’s about 7,000 NGN just to wax your arms. If you’re doing more areas, you do the math.
