Ingrown hair is a condition where hair curls back or grows sideways into the skin. The condition is most prevalent among people who have coarse or curly hair (African hair texture).
It may or may not be accompanied by an infection of the hair follicle known as folliculitis or razor bumps known as pseudofolliculitis barbae, which vary in size. While ingrown hairs most commonly appear in areas where the skin is shaved such as; face, legs, underarms, pubic region, etc, It can appear anywhere.
Anything which causes the hair to be broken off unevenly with a sharp tip (especially shaving) can cause ingrown hairs. Ingrown hairs are also caused due to poor/lack of natural exfoliation in the skin known as natural cell turnover which is meant to occur every 28-30days. People whose cell turnover take longer days are more prone to ingrown hairs.
Symptoms include rashes, itching skin, and hair that remains in spite of shaving. The site of the ingrown hair will form a reddish, raised bump, similar to a cystic pimple, which darkens to leave spots over time.
